Google Meet
Google Meet is the online conferencing tool in the Google Suite, which replaced Google Hangouts in October 2019. Please note that TAC does not provide technical assistance for Google Meet at this time. To launch Google Meet, clickย the Google apps iconย (the 9 dots icon) to expand the list. If you have not used Google Meet before, the icon may be at the bottom. Scroll down until you see the app.
Before you continue, you should make sure that your microphone and webcam are plugged in. Otherwise, you will see this image later on!
To start an online meeting, click 'Join or start a meeting.' You will then be prompted to enter a meeting name. It is recommended to give a meaningful name so that your audience knows they are in the right place. Avoid using special symbols like periods and parentheses or you may not be able to successfully create the meeting online.
ย
Allow meet.google.com to use your microphone and camera. You should see that the camera is starting and the two circular icons (one for microphone, one for video) will have different colors. Once the equipment is working, click 'Join Meeting' to host.
You can then either 'Add People' directly or 'Copy joining info' and provide it to the audience.
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
You can create cloud/online documents similar to those of Microsoft Office using Google Suite. Docs is like Word, Sheets is similar to Excel, and Slides is for presentations. You can share the documents with students online to View, Comment, and even Edit together.
To launch these tools, click the Google App icon (the 9 dots icon) to expand the list. If you have not used any of these office tools before, these icons may be at the bottom. Scroll down until you see the app.
Choose the tool you'd like to use and then choose to start with a blank document or a template. Give the file an appropriate name. By Default, everyone at Waubonsee can see the document. However, without the URL, students do not know that your files exist.
When you are ready to share the file with students. Click 'Share' at the right upper corner. Copy the Shareable link and provide it to student on Blackboard or Canvas. You can also choose who can comment or/and edit by entering that person's email address.
